DIRECT, healthcare standard protocol, secure data transmission

Direct is a widely used healthcare protocol for secure, verified data transmission. It shares some similarities with email and is quickly replacing mailing and faxing of patient records.

About Direct

  • Combines ease of email with an added layer of security and identity verification
  • Routing of messages is handled through SMTP
  • Confidentiality and integrity of the content are handled through S/MIME encryption and signatures
  • Content is packaged using MIME and, optionally, XDM
  • Authenticity of the Sender and Receiver is established with X.509 digital certificates
