Direct is a widely used healthcare protocol for secure, verified data transmission. It shares some similarities with email and is quickly replacing mailing and faxing of patient records.

About Direct

  • Combines ease of email with an added layer of security and identity verification 
  • Routing of messages is handled through SMTP
  • Confidentiality and integrity of the content are handled through S/MIME encryption and signatures
  • Content is packaged using MIME and, optionally, XDM
  • Authenticity of the Sender and Receiver is established with X.509 digital certificates

Your EHR will need Direct Protocol 170.315(h)(1) OR 170.315(h)(2) capabilities & a HISP in order to certify Direct under 2015 Edition. You can also use direct to meet the 2015 Transition of Care measure 170.315(b)(1).
 
MaxMD is certified for both 170.315(h)(1) and 170.315(h)(2) and its functionality covers the “Applicability Statement for Secure Health Transport, Version 1.2”.
